Personal: Val has lived in Houghton Lake since 1981. One son Ben, educated in Houghton Lake Schools, also graduated from The United States Air Force Academy in 1997. Ben has served overseas in the U.S. Air Force for 5 years as a fighter pilot flying the F-16 Falcons. He is currently stationed at Nellis AFB and is an Instructor Pilot for "Weapons School" (Top Gun) in January of 2007. He is married to Tracy from Westpoint, MS. They have a baby girl, Lola, born in July 2006.

Val has owned a commercial business (resort property) in Houghton Lake for 16 years, and has participated in many community projects and events. Val holds an associate's degree in business from San Diego College of Business.
